I stopped by to see an old high school friend who was in town, visiting his parents, in the house where we used to hang out all the time. We were talking in his parents' newly refurbished kitchen when he started to crack up about something. When he could finally get the words out through the laughter, he said his parents had laid the new kitchen tiles down themselves, and obviously hadn't planned properly. He pointed out a whole row of tiles that they had to cut in an awkward way, right in the most visible area of the kitchen. If they had thought it through beforehand, they would surely have realized not to end up at the most visible area and then have to cut the tiles, but to start from there and end up at the much less visible area and cut the tile along that edge. We had a good-natured laugh! He said his mom says she wishes they had contracted Empire Today and had them do the installation. He also said that with the kitchen being done, his parents had moved on to carpeting the basement, but they were going to choose some Empire carpet and definitely let the company professionally install it. Live and learn! Meanwhile, the good laugh we got felt like old times…when we used to totally crack up over things. When his parents came in, I of course, complimented them on what was indeed, overall, a beautiful remodeling job. It was just hard not to laugh when I referred to the floor!

There are positive signs for the US Remodeling Industry this year. The Remodeling Market Index (RMI) component that evaluates current market conditions, increased to 48.4 from 43.0 in the fourth quarter of 2011. Also, the RMI component which determines the future market situations increased from 40.4 to 44.8 in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Soon after the RMI showed the highest rise in five years at the end of 2011, the press conference at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) International Builders' Show (IBS) in Orlando, Florida, revealed that in line with this growth of RMI, the residential remodeling market would also continue to grow by about 8.9 percent in 2012.

The key driver of the remodeling industry is the sentiment in home owners to remain in their homes instead of moving to different infrastructure. Also, economic recovery, energy efficient upgrade practices, aging-in-place retrofits and the trend of reinvesting back into the old properties is recently driving the remodeling industry fast. Apart from this, efforts of NAHB to fulfill financial requirements from remodeling assignments, and addressing their equity issues have also been encouraging the remodeling industry. The behavior of the Housing industry would also have an impact on the growth of the Remodeling industry.
